Choose the right pallet rack - create an optimal storage solution

The correct pallet racking and a well-planned warehouse layout makes logistics work far more efficiently and contributes to reducing the company's costs. For the best results, it's important to choose a pallet system that suits the business, build up a good work flow and have a strong focus on safety.

Create an effective work flow

Start from where the loading and unloading bays are and adapt the location of the pallet racks accordingly. Especially in large warehouses, it's important to be able to quickly get rid of the goods before the next delivery arrives. It's also good to choose solutions that can quickly take in large quantities.

It's important to analyse your range to find out which products sell the fastest and which have a lower turnover. Place the high-frequency products in the most easily accessible places so that they have the shortest possible path through the warehouse.

Weight and size

From a safety point of view, it is very important that the pallet racks are not loaded with more weight than they are intended for. Pallet racks must be provided with loading signs that specify the permitted weight per pallet rack section.

In addition to full pallets, pallet racks can also be loaded with half pallets. The scaffolding then needs to be supplemented with half pallet inserts which can be attached to support beams.

Maximise inventory volume

Load at height. The height of your pallet racks naturally depends on the room's design and ceiling height. A pallet rack where the support beams can be adjusted infrequently enables adaptation to your warehouse needs. You may need some room for items that do not require the same height as a fully loaded pallet. Mount a beam shelf or mesh shelf over the support beams to create storage space for unpalletized goods.

In a large logistics warehouse, mobile pallet racks and pushback solutions can streamline the warehouse process.

Plan long-term and build a warehouse that does not need to be changed for a long time or build a foundation that you can then expand as the warehouse needs grow. More sections can be added as and when needed.

The endless possibilities of pallet racking

Cable Reel Racking is adapted for storage, handling and suspension of cable reels.

With Long Side Inserts it's possible to store pallets handled on the long side.

Pull Out Units mounted directly on to the support beams of the racking facilitate the handling of goods. Pull out the unit to easily access the contents of the pallet.

Mount a tool board between the ends of the pallet rack and you can always have useful tools close at hand.

Suspension for waste bins can be mounted on the end of the pallet rack so you don't have to have them standing on the floor.

A practical divider allows you to store slabs such as stone or glass, standing in the pallet rack.

Security in the warehouse

A safe workplace is of the utmost importance and every aspect of safety needs to be included in the planning of the warehouse to avoid accidents. For example, try to collect all manual picking in one place and, as much as possible, limit truck traffic from areas where people walk.

 Minimise the risks using different safety measures:

  • Collision protection such as post and gable protection protects the pallet stand from being hit by forklifts.
  • Anti-collapse panels are mounted on the back of the rack and prevents things from falling down the back.
  • Pallet stops prevent the pallets from being pushed in too far and tipping over on the other side of the pallet rack.

The EUR-pallet measures 800 × 1,200 mm and is 144 mm high.
A half pallet measures 800x600 mm , which is half the size of an EUR-pallet.
Single-use pallets are generally not approved for pallet racking. To avoid repacking the goods, items on single-use pallets can be placed on top of an EUR-pallet or a pallet insert.
The counterbalance forklift is the most common type.
Pallet racks should have signs indicating the maximum load per section and load level. If the same weight limits apply to all levels and sections in the rack, signs on the end frames are sufficient.
Warehouse height can be used effectively, and goods are always easily accessible. A safe working environment can be created with pallet racking.
Palletised goods are placed directly on the floor and stacked vertically on top of each other.
