How to get more out of your school corridors
School corridors are often seen as little more than passageways between classrooms, the canteen, and the library. But with the right approach, they can become much more than that - practical, inviting spaces that support both learning and social interaction. At AJ Products, we have long experience working with schools and can share ideas on how to turn underused corridors into valuable areas for study and gathering.
Some schools benefit from spacious entrances, cloakrooms, and common rooms, making it easy to assign each area a clear function. Others have more limited space, which means every square metre needs to be used wisely. In these cases, a creative approach can make all the difference. Corridors, for example, don’t have to serve only as transport routes between classrooms. With the right design, they can also become valuable areas for group work, socialising and relaxation during breaks, or quiet study during free periods.
A complement to the classroom
If your school lacks dedicated group rooms - or if they’re located too far away - a seating area in the corridor can be an ideal solution. Positioned close to the classroom, it allows pupils to work in smaller groups without losing access to teacher support. The proximity makes it easy for teachers to supervise activity while also giving pupils quick access to guidance whenever needed.
Advantages of fixed seating arrangements
Seating areas in corridors work best when they stay in place. Fixed or heavier furniture prevents items from being moved around too much, which not only keeps the space tidy but also ensures safety. Scattered furniture can quickly look messy and, more importantly, may obstruct evacuation routes if a passageway becomes blocked.
Some furniture suggestions
Not sure which seating furniture will work best in your school corridors? Here are a few popular options from our wide range:
- Seating group OCTO - a complete, fixed seating group that works well in both corridors and common rooms. Its round shape is welcoming and encourages social interaction.
- START - a versatile sofa designed for corridor spaces. It can stand alone, be placed back-to-back or connected in a row. Floor brackets make it possible to secure the base for extra stability.
- Seating group ANNA - a practical, flexible solution that combines a table and bench in one. Position it as a row along the wall, extend it out into the corridor, or place it freestanding as a group.
- VARIETY modular series - available in multiple configurations, with the oval sofa with backrest being ideal for corridors. It offers generous seating, is highly durable, and comes in a choice of colours.
Student lockers – even in the corridors
A central cloakroom near the entrance is ideal if space allows. But if this isn’t possible, student lockers can just as easily be placed in the corridors, helping you make the most of the space available. To avoid congestion, it’s best to position the lockers along one wall only, ensuring there’s still plenty of room for pupils to move freely.
Student lockers are available in several heights, which can be combined to create a more dynamic look in the corridors. For everyday practicality, each locker should include at least one shelf for books and offer space for a school bag, outerwear, a helmet and other personal belongings.
Consider acoustics
Children and young people can easily become noisy in groups, and the sound levels in a school corridor can quickly rise. Good acoustics are therefore essential for creating a more pleasant environment. There are several effective sound absorption solutions to choose from: fabric-covered floor screens, wall- or ceiling-mounted acoustic panels, and other sound-absorbing materials. These not only reduce noise but can also add colour and style to the corridor design. Upholstered furniture, carpets and heavier curtains will further improve the acoustic environment and contribute to a calmer atmosphere.
Tip! Strategically placed waste sorting units help prevent littered corridors. Our space-saving waste sorting cabinets and bins can be conveniently positioned so that students and teachers can sort and dispose of rubbish right where they sit or pass by.
