How to Clean a Whiteboard

How to clean a whiteboard or dry erase board

The sun shines through the office window and onto the wall where the whiteboard hangs and in the bright light you can suddenly see how dirty it is. Cleaning a whiteboard is easy. If you use good quality marker pens and replace the whiteboard wiper from time to time, the whiteboard will stay clean for longer.
The first whiteboards were made in the 1960s from the same material as photographic film. Whiteboards were very expensive back then and ink that had dried on could sometimes be difficult to remove. Nowadays, whiteboards are usually made of sheet metal with a glossy enamel coating that is easy to clean.

Cleaning a whiteboard

Cleaning is no more complicated than wiping the board with a clean cloth and lukewarm water. Then dry it with another cloth and wait for a while. The board must be completely dry before you start writing on it. If the board is very dirty, you may need to use a whiteboard cleaner that you can easily spray on and wipe off. Don't forget to use a product specially designed for whiteboards. Then wipe the whiteboard again with a damp cloth. One tip is to clean the whiteboard often with water and only use whiteboard cleaner in extreme cases. Using the cleaner sparingly reduces the risk of causing any damage to the surface.

This is why the surface gets dirty

One explanation may be that the whiteboard wiper is worn out and needs to be replaced. Another explanation is a poor-quality pen that leaves dirt and grease on the surface.

Whiteboards can also get dirty from people's hands. Everyone will at some point have made a mistake and wiped off what they have written with their fingers or even their whole hand. Grease from people's hands can form a film on the board. If you also use unsuitable cleaning products such as soap or detergent, the enamel surface of the whiteboard can be damaged, which makes dirt more difficult to remove.

The advantage of an enamelled surface is that it is hard-wearing. It is easy to keep clean and does not get scratched. The material can cope with large numbers of meetings in the office, year in year out, where the whiteboard is a useful tool that everyone focuses on.
